New York impressions-a life inspiration day

Today we all followed what happened in New York, as Sandy hit the coastline this morning.

Weird how these kind of disasters keep me fascinated and drawn to the screens. Forces of nature in an enormous clash with human build stuff.

This is a selection of pictures that caught my eye today.
The horror and beauty of nature in all it's destroying power.

Where do I put my business cards?-a life inspiration day

I needed something small but glamorous to store my brand new business cards and look, Anna designed a great, baby blue clutch with a golden bambi lock.
Very kitch, very Miss Vogue Japan, and my cards? They fit in perfectly.

What we already know about Models Kitchen-a life inspiration day

Cesar Casier, for the ones who know him, is adorable. Always was.

I know him from the time his mum Carine brought him once in a while to her shop Oona when he was a child, and we saw Cesar growing up.

Nobody was surprised when he took on a succesful modeling career and moved to New York.

His blog about his life and friends is really fun to read and is like his personality: fresh, open en no nonsense. http://thecesarsalad.blogspot.be/2012/06/cesars-modelkitchen.html

It's on this blog I first read about him writing a cook book.

Another cook book, you might ask. Yep!
Photos: Courtesy of Cesar Casier
And what is the book about? First, it's called 'Model Kitchen'. Other names like 'Cesar's salad' or ' Models do eat' did not pass. Enjoy about 75 recipes in Casier's Model Kitchen, with contributions from his top model friends with off course very yummie food and fashion pics.

“I have this great passion for food and fashion. I left home for modeling and I didn’t want to go to all these fast-food restaurants, so I started to learn to cook,” Casier explains in an interview with Style.com

“So, I decided to make a cookbook about what models eat. I have a bucket list of things I want to do in my life, like make a club hit, go to Sydney, go bungee jumping, and also make a cookbook. This one, I can stripe off.”

Think healthy, easy and affordable recipes along with Casier’s favorite local hot spots in the big fashion cities like our beloved CafĂ© Gitane or Peels in New York.

A foreword by Derek Blasberg, styling by Tom Van Dorpe, and contributions from Lily Donaldson, Milla Jovovich, Karlie Kloss, Lindsey Wixson, and Bette Franke. From Jovovich’s baked salmon with asparagus, a Julia Restoin-Roitfeld chicken dish to Ceesie's own juice cleanses and skinny dips. We can't wait!
For the ones who want to run to the store, hold your horses!

Model Kitchen goes on sale in Belgium early next month and  in select stores in the U.S. shortly after.

A recipe preview? Here we go!

The Cesar Salad
For the salad:
-2 chicken filets
-1/2 head of iceberg lettuce
-2 eggs
-1 slice of whole-grain bread, toasted
-1 pear
-1 radish
-salt and pepper
For the Caesar dressing:
-2 egg yolks
-5 anchovy filets, packed in oil
-1 clove of garlic
-olive oil
-1 teaspoon mustard
-lemon juice
-salt and pepper
Wash and shred the lettuce. In the meantime, bring some water to a boil in a small saucepan. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and place it on a baking sheet in the oven. When the water boils, cook the eggs until they are hard-boiled (8 to 10 minutes). Peel the pear and cut into slices. Also lay the pear slices on the baking sheet and broil, but for no more than 20 seconds. Arrange the lettuce in the center of the plate. Peel and quarter the hard-boiled egg and place on top. When the chicken is ready, cut it into pieces and cut the toast into small squares. Add to the salad. Finally, top the salad with the grilled pear slices and thinly sliced radish. Serve with Caesar dressing on the side.

For the dressing, Mince the anchovies and grate the clove of garlic. Place the egg yolks in a bowl and add the anchovies, garlic, and mustard. Mix thoroughly and gently fold in a bit of fruity olive oil and a little lemon juice until you have a smooth dressing. Season to taste with pepper and just a bit of salt. The dressing won’t need much salt because the anchovies are salty enough.

Rio in Ghent-a life inspiration day

It-bag shoppers paradise in Ghent!

Photo Kate Stockman

Normally you have to book a trip to designers heaven cosmo's like Milano, Paris, or for my part NY city to lay your hands on thĂ© bag of the season that makes your heart melt. (No, we don't count instant gratification non-personal online stores)

Not any more girls!

Ghent-my-city has a new spot that absolutely must be visited.

I know, not easy to find at this very moment: the entire facade is covered with scaffolding but once you fought your way in, you're welcomed by the lovely Christina in her warm, calming, very stylish store.

Without a doubt, you recognize the hand of Glenn Sestig. (Tip 1: Check when you enter the very 70 ties fabulous doorknob in agate stone! Love it.)

Besides the good selection of arm and hand candy( Yves Saint Laurent, Comme des Garçons, Lanvin, Alexander McQueen, Maison Michel, Stella McCartney and Repossi), you'll find the jewels of the moment, scarfs, belts and other must-have accessories.

One bag caught my eye: Stella's Fallabella non leather bag in grey. Wishlist hit number one.

But hey..., I also LOVE the McQueen clutch in black fur (one day, I'll be the very proud owner of one), and the Maison Michels bunny/cat ears in lace.
When my stuff from McQueen ( scull scarfs, rings or other) needs replacement, this is a close by first aid address.

Why Rio? The great 80 ties song Rio by the 'glamrockers' Duran Duran could be a perfect excuse, but there's an easier explanation. Shop owner Christina has Brazilian roots so this store brings a little Rio glam vibe to Ghent. Thank you!

Oh, smokey eyes Carine! An inspiration-story day.

I must admit it, I've always liked Carine.

Oui, La Roitfeld as she probably was called in Paris when she worked there as Vogue's fashion editor.

But I spotted her long before that. As a young stylist for Elle, and later in partnership with the young Mario Testino. A match made in heaven and when a third star in the making, Mister Tom Ford himself, joined the hip entourage they could go wild. So they did.

Ford and Roitfeld invented the wave in fashion photography called 'Porn chic' (Carine likes the label 'Erotica Chic' better) and Ford's collections for Gucci were the perfect playground for their experiments. Remember model Carmen Kass pulling down her knickers and showing off body hair shaved into the letter 'G'. Carine's idea.

Wanna know more? Check Carine Roitfeld's book, Irreverent!
Published by Rizzoli. This fabulous 368-page tome looks back at the fashion stylist/editor/muse and her 30-year career.

I pre-ordered it more than a year ago if you want to know :-)

But I wanted to sign you in on La Roitfeld's make up collection for my ab fab brand for years MAC

A collaboration that was meant to be, as Carine has more or less always the same style. Her clothes (designer black, black, black and some white), her out-of-bed-je-ne-sais-quoi hairdo and without a doubt her makeup.

So, what else could and would she bring but a version of her own, strong recognisable signature look, sticking to the strict dress code of 'black tie and dark, 'nightlived' smokey eyes?

Launched with a fun 'making off video' and a party in NY off course, we only could wait for the real stuff.

Last week released in (too) limited edition at Mac stores, a small but very to the point collection. I see it as thĂ© perfect toolbox for a look Ă  la Carine.

Nude nail polish, check. Pallet of mat or shiny black, browns and creme eyeshadows, check. Nude lipstick to blend away your mouth, check.

A must have eye lash curler, an eye brow pencil, mascara...

All in a beautiful mat packaging with Carine's famous 'CR' signature.

My selection?

Last but not least, die-hards started the hilarious blog 'I want to be a Roitfeld', that follows all of Carine's family: meet hubby Christian plus kids gorgeous Julia and Vladimir. Celebrity addicts only.

Magical Rain Room-an inspiration day in London

Each 6 months when I travel to the London trend seminar Futurelab, we use our free morning to check out a new gallery, a must see exhibition or a secret spot. Last year we all ready discovered The White Chapel and a top expo of the crazy, delicious Japanese artist Kusama at Tate Modern, so we sat standard high.

I read two days ago about the opening of the London Rain Room at The Curve at the Barbican. We arrived at 10 am, and as the event is so new, the queue was very reasonable. (Not anymore, check end of this post)

The miraculous 'rain room' is a technical wonder by contemporary art studio Random International and uses 2,500 litres of water, falling at 1,000 litres per minute.

Entering the room was surreal!

Imagine a black, dark hall way, follow the light and the rain sounds and enter a magical space where only the rain is present.

Bernard Polet and Kate Stockman ready to hit the rain, or not.

"I stepped on the black roosters, into the pouring rain and looked up to
see what happens. And look, the water responds to me, surrounds me, the sounds are relaxing.

It's a great feeling that you have to experience yourself!"

With several 3D sensory cameras fixed to the ceiling of the Rain Room, every person who walks into the 100 square metre space is recognised.

As you move around "slowly", the rain stops overhead."If you run around you'll get wet because while the sensor picks up the movement, gravity limits the speed of the drops falling from the ceiling."

Bernard Polet bewitched by the fabulous experience.

The installation has been designed to create an intimate atmosphere of contemplation and it works.

There's no distractive sound, you are very close [to the rain] and it is beautiful as it becomes hypnotic and the sound of the rain is extremely calming.

Visitors can choose to simply watch the spectacle or find their way carefully through the rain, putting their trust in the work to the test. Please be aware that due to the popularity of Rain Room, the queue time currently stands at around two hours. The Curve advises visitors to arrive two hours before closing time in order to guarantee entry into the installation.
Rain Room at The Curve runs until March next year.

Experience a unique fusion of art and movement on four Sundays during the exhibition as dancers respond to Rain Room.

Wasbar launch party-an inspiration story day

The rumors, the gossip, the WOM did it's job months before we even could see what the fuzz was all about!

"Some guys in Ghent planed to make a new style 'wasserette with bar' and it was going to be the bom!"

With a buzz like that the expectations were VERY high, and when I heard that design agency Pinkeye was involved in the scenery it could' get any better. Ruud, Luc and the others would certainly do a splendid job.

I spotted the new venue to my client Eskimo (an authentic Ghent based night and underwear label-yeah,the one with the Eskimo and Pinguin logo) and they did join in as one of the early bird sponsors of Wasbar!

What about the venue, what about the was bar concept, what about the party?
Well, in one word: DE MAXX!

Dries Henau and Yuri Vandenbogaerde, the head and heart of this Wasbar idea jumped in their best suit (nice choice, guys!), talked to the press, did some interviews for TV and played perfect host.

Saskia of The Wicked PR gathered an eclectic mix of Ghent and Antwerp based crowd, that blended well together.

The vibe was good, the band Zinger that won the last edition of 'De Beloften' gave a great kick off concert and there was more than enough cava, beer and fun people.

I like the Wasbar design, it's not pretentious, it feels homy in a way, with a 'new retro' touch. I love the handcrafted logo, the wash bags, the mix of new up cycled furniture and the washed off colors.
The omni present sanserveria's are not my thing, maybe I saw one too many in other design concepts. But hey, thats a detail.

Check out the washing machines, they all have names of grandparents.
There was a Facebook contest to choose the best names.
My grandma's name was Aleidis, great name though, but the chosen ones fitted more the retro concept: enter den Marcel, ons Mariette or La Juliana.

Electrolux had the privilege to deliver the high-tech machines, wash-virgins find loads of tips & advice on the walls or on Samsung tablets and Ecover takes (eco)care of your laundry dirt. Nice detail: also dry cleaning and ironing service are provided!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, there is also 'coiffeur de maison' Olivier, who cuts, blows and styles your hair while your laundry gets clean. Olivier uses the Steampod, the steam iron for hip hairstylists. So ladies who like a 'one-hour- quicky', you know where to go.

Mum's all over Flanders will notice that there is a new spot in town! No longer they will need to wash the laundry of their students in the weekend, as the kids found their favorite spot to do it themselves.

Sometimes we just need one brilliant idea, to change the mentality of a generation.
